We say: The prohibition is directed at two matters: first, the tying up of the animal for target practice, and second, eating it. The explicit prohibition of eating it has come in the hadith of Abu al-Darda' recorded by al-Tirmidhi (1541), with the wording: "The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, prohibited eating the mujaththamah—that is, the animal that is tied up and shot at with arrows." And in the hadith of Ibn 'Abbas recorded by al-Hakim 2/34, and from him by al-Bayhaqi 9/334, he said: "The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, prohibited the milk of the jallalah, eating the mujaththamah, and drinking from the mouth of the waterskin."

As for drinking from the mouth of the waterskin, it is only disliked because of the fear of some harm that may be in it which the drinker does not see until it enters his stomach. Thus it is recommended that one drink from a visible vessel that he can see.

Al-Munawi said in "Fayd al-Qadir" 6/316: He prohibited drinking from the mouth of the waterskin, that is, the opening of the water bag, because the water pouring all at once into the stomach is very harmful, and there may be something the drinker does not see that enters his stomach and harms him, and because it may become foul-smelling from the repetition of his breath in it and thus be disliked, and because drinking in this manner fills the stomach with air, making it too constricted to take its share of water, and the air crowds it or harms it.

Then he said: What has been established is not contradicted by what is in "al-Shama'il" that the Chosen One, peace and blessings be upon him, stood up to a hanging waterskin and drank from its mouth, whereupon Maymunah or Umm Sulaym cut off the place of his mouth and kept it with her as a blessing, because the Chosen One, peace and blessings be upon him, is not like others—by way of blessing, purity, fragrance, and safety from calamities and misfortunes.

Similar to this is what Ibn al-'Arabi said in "'Aridat al-Ahwadhi" 8/82, where he said: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, is more fragrant than musk, so he does not fall under the prohibition.

The hadith they cited about the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, drinking from the mouth of the waterskin was recorded by Ibn Majah (3423) and al-Tirmidhi (2001), and its chain of transmission is sound.

We say: As for the prohibition of riding the jallalah, al-Munawi said in "Fayd al-Qadir" 6/313: A group of the Salaf took it by its apparent meaning and forbade riding it. 'Umar said to a man who had jallalah camels: "Do not perform Hajj on them, nor 'Umrah." And his son said: "I will not accompany anyone who rides them." This was interpreted in "al-Matamih" as indicating severity of disapproval. He said: There is no meaning in riding it that necessitates prohibition. Al-Munawi said: Whoever claims that this is due to the impurity of its sweat, and thus touches it, has erred, for the narration in Sahih is restricted to camels, and their sweat is pure.

We say: Al-Jallalah: Ibn al-Athir said in "al-Nihayah": The jallalah among animals is the one that eats dung. And al-jallah means camel dung, placed in the position of filth. It is said: "The animal jallat al-jallah," so it is jallah and jallalah—that is, when it picks it up.
