3666 — Musaddad narrated to us: Ja‘far ibn Sulayman narrated to us, from al-Mu‘alla ibn Ziyad, from al-‘Ala’ ibn Bashir al-Muzani, from Abu al-Siddiq al-Naji, from Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri, who said:

I sat with a group of the weak among the Muhajirun — some of them screening themselves with others for lack of clothing — while a reader was reciting to us, when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came and stood over us. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood, the reader fell silent. He greeted us, then said: “What were you doing?” We said: “O Messenger of Allah, we had a reader who was reciting to us, and we were listening to the Book of Allah.” He said: “Praise be to Allah, who has placed among my ummah those with whom I have been commanded to remain patient.” Then he sat among us, making himself level with us, and gestured with his hand, saying: “Thus be seated, for I am not an arrogant king.” Then he said: “Indeed, the people before you were only destroyed by the harshness of their prophets and the harshness of their monks, until they exaggerated and went astray, and they did not enjoin good nor forbid evil.” Then he said: “Indeed, the best of jihad is a word of truth spoken before a tyrannical ruler.” Then he said: “Indeed, the best of martyrs is Hamzah ibn ‘Abd al-Muttalib, and a man who stood before a tyrannical ruler and commanded him with good and forbade him from evil, and the ruler killed him.”

Then he said: “Indeed, the most beloved of jihad to Allah is a word of truth spoken before a tyrannical ruler.” Then he said: “Indeed, the best of martyrs is Hamzah ibn ‘Abd al-Muttalib, and a man who stood before a tyrannical ruler and commanded him with good and forbade him from evil, and the ruler killed him.”
