Narrated to me Abu al-Tahir, he said: Informed me Ibn Wahb, from Malik ibn Anas, from Thawr ibn Zayd al-Du'ali, from Salim Abu al-Ghayth, the freed slave of Ibn Muti', from Abu Hurayrah. And narrated to us Qutaybah ibn Sa'id — and this is his narration — narrated to us Abd al-Aziz, meaning Ibn Muhammad, from Thawr, from Abu al-Ghayth, from Abu Hurayrah, who said:

We went out with the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, to Khaybar, and Allah granted us victory. We did not gain gold or silver as spoils; we gained goods, food, and clothing. Then we set off toward the valley, and with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, there was a slave of his whom a man from Judham, called Rifa'ah ibn Zayd of Banu al-Dubayb, had given to him. When we descended into the valley, the slave of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, stood up to unpack his saddle, and he was struck by an arrow, which proved to be his death. We said, "Congratulations to him for martyrdom, O Messenger of Allah." The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "No, by the One in Whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, the cloak he took from the spoils on the day of Khaybar, which was not included in the distribution, is surely blazing upon him as fire."

He said: So the people were alarmed. A man came with one sandal strap or two sandal straps and said, "O Messenger of Allah, I acquired this on the day of Khaybar." The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "A sandal strap of fire, or two sandal straps of fire."
