1. Chapter: What has come regarding the times of prayer from the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace —

149. Hannād ibn al-Sarī narrated to us, saying: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī al-Zinād narrated to us, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn al-Ḥārith ibn ʿAyyāsh ibn Abī Rabīʿah, from Ḥakīm ibn Ḥakīm ibn ʿAbbād, who said: Nāfiʿ ibn Jubayr ibn Muṭʿim informed me,

who said: Ibn ʿAbbās informed me that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: "Gabriel led me in prayer at the House twice. He prayed the noon prayer (ẓuhr) on the first of them when the shadow was like a sandal-strap. Then he prayed the afternoon prayer (ʿaṣr) when everything was like its own shadow. Then he prayed the sunset prayer (maghrib) when the sun had set and the fasting person had broken his fast. Then he prayed the night prayer (ʿishāʾ) when the twilight had disappeared. Then he prayed the dawn prayer (fajr) when the dawn had brightened and food had become forbidden to the fasting person.

On the second occasion, he prayed the noon prayer (ẓuhr) when the shadow of everything was like itself, at the time of the afternoon prayer (ʿaṣr) of the previous day. Then he prayed the afternoon prayer (ʿaṣr) when the shadow of everything was twice itself. Then he prayed the sunset prayer (maghrib) at its first time. Then he prayed the final night prayer (ʿishāʾ al-ākhirah) when one-third of the night had passed. Then he prayed the morning prayer (ṣubḥ) when the earth had become bright. Then he turned to me."
