4 - Chapter on the Location of Cupping
3859 - 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Ibrahim al-Dimashqi, known as Duhaym, and Kathir ibn 'Ubayd narrated to us, both saying: al-Walid narrated to us, from Ibn Thawban, from his father--------------------------------------------
= 'Ali ibn Abi Rafi', with it. In the narration of Hammad ibn Khayyat it occurs as: 'Ali ibn 'Ubayd Allah, and the correct version, as al-Tirmidhi stated, is: 'Ubayd Allah ibn 'Ali. They both confined themselves to mentioning henna, but the first said in his narration: "No sore or thorn would afflict the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, except that he would apply henna to it." And the second said: "A sore or a bruise."
It is in the *Musnad* of Ahmad (27617) and (27618).
And in the chapter on cupping for head pain, there is what al-Bukhari (5700) and (5701) narrated from Ibn 'Abbas, who said: "The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, performed cupping while in the state of ihram on his head, due to a migraine he was suffering." And similar to it is in Muslim (1202).
Ibn al-Qayyim said in *Zad al-Ma'ad* 4/89: "Among the benefits of henna: it is a resolvent, beneficial for burns from fire, and it contains a strength compatible with the nerves when applied as a poultice. It benefits, when chewed, against mouth ulcers and aphthous stomatitis (which are pustules that appear at the base of the tongue and peel at the roots of the teeth) occurring in it, and it cures thrush (which are pustules that form on the membrane of the mouth or tongue) occurring in the mouths of children. And the poultice of it benefits against hot inflammatory swellings..."
He also said in *al-Zad* 4/55: "Cupping on the upper back benefits against pain of the shoulder and throat. Cupping on the two jugular veins benefits against diseases of the head and its parts, such as the face, teeth, ears, eyes, and nose, and the throat, if the onset of these is due to an excess of blood or its corruption, or both...
Cupping beneath the chin benefits against toothache, facial pain, and throat pain, if used at its proper time, and it purifies the head and the jaws. Cupping on the top of the foot serves in place of phlebotomy of the saphenous vein, which is a great vein at the ankle, and it benefits against ulcers of the thighs and legs, cessation of menstruation, and itching occurring in the testicles.
Cupping at the lower chest is beneficial against boils of the thigh, its mange and pustules, and against gout, hemorrhoids, and elephantiasis (which is a disease arising from thick, dense swelling in the foot and leg, penetrated by protruding knots)."
