Yahya ibn Yahya and Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah narrated to us, both from Hushaym—Yahya said: Hushaym informed us—from Mansur, from al-Walid ibn Muslim, from Abu al-Siddiq, from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, who said: We used to estimate the length of the Messenger of Allah's (peace be upon him) standing in the noon (Zuhr) and afternoon ('Asr) prayers. We estimated his standing in the first two rak'ahs of the noon prayer to be the length of the recitation of "Alif Lam Mim, the Revelation of the Prostration" (Sajdah), and we estimated his standing in the last two to be half of that. We estimated his standing in the first two rak'ahs of the afternoon prayer to be the length of his standing in the last two of the noon prayer, and in the last two of the afternoon prayer to be half of that. Abu Bakr did not mention "Alif Lam Mim, the Revelation of the Prostration" in his narration, and he said: the length of thirty verses.
