And Salama ibn Shabib narrated to me, saying: al-Hasan ibn A‘yan narrated to us, saying: Ma‘qil — that is, ibn ‘Ubayd Allah — narrated to us, from al-Zuhri, who said: ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn ‘Abd Allah ibn Ka‘b ibn Malik informed me, from his uncle, ‘Ubayd Allah ibn Ka‘b — and he was Ka‘b’s guide when his sight was lost, and he was the most knowledgeable of his people and the most retentive of the hadiths of the companions of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace — who said: I heard my father, Ka‘b ibn Malik — and he was one of the three whose repentance was accepted — narrating that he never stayed behind from the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, in any campaign he fought, except for two campaigns. And he related the hadith in full, and in it he said: And the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, went out with a great many people, more than ten thousand, and no recording scribe could gather them all together.
