Qutaybah ibn Sa'id narrated to us, 'Abd al-'Aziz — meaning Ibn Muhammad — narrated to us, from al-'Ala', from his father, from Abu Hurayrah, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Indeed, a man may perform the deeds of the people of Paradise for a long time, then his deeds are sealed with the deeds of the people of the Fire. And indeed, a man may perform the deeds of the people of the Fire for a long time, then his deeds are sealed with the deeds of the people of Paradise."
