Yahya ibn Yahya, Yahya ibn Ayyub, Qutaybah, and Ibn Hujr narrated to us. Yahya ibn Yahya said: "We were informed," while the others said: "Narrated to us Isma'il" — meaning Ibn Ja'far — from Muhammad ibn Abi Harmalah, from 'Ata' and Sulayman, the two sons of Yasar, and from Abu Salamah ibn 'Abd al-Rahman, that 'A'ishah said:

The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was lying down in my house with his thighs or his shanks uncovered. Abu Bakr asked permission to enter, and he permitted him while he was in that state, and he conversed with him. Then 'Umar asked permission to enter, and he permitted him while he was in that same state, and he conversed with him. Then 'Uthman asked permission to enter, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, sat up and straightened his clothing. Muhammad said: "And I do not say that this happened on one day." Then 'Uthman entered and conversed with him. When he left, 'A'ishah said: "Abu Bakr entered and you did not stir for him nor pay him any mind, then 'Umar entered and you did not stir for him nor pay him any mind, then 'Uthman entered and you sat up and straightened your clothing." He said: "Should I not feel shy before a man before whom the angels feel shy?"
