Narrated ʿUbaydullah ibn Muʿādh al-ʿAnbarī: My father narrated to us: Kahmas narrated to us, from Ibn Buraydah, who said: ʿAbdullah ibn al-Mughaffal saw a man from among his companions throwing pebbles with his fingers, so he said to him, "Do not throw pebbles, for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to dislike—or he said—forbid throwing pebbles, for neither is game caught by it, nor is the enemy wounded by it, but it breaks the tooth and gouges out the eye." Then he saw him after that throwing pebbles, so he said to him, "I told you that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to dislike—or forbid—throwing pebbles, yet I see you throwing pebbles. I will not speak to you a word, such and such [a number of times]."
