Zuḥayr ibn Ḥarb narrated to me: Abū al-Naḍr Hāshim ibn al-Qāsim narrated to us: Sulaymān narrated to us, from Thābit, from Anas — may God be pleased with him — who said: The Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, was praying during Ramadan. I came and stood beside him, and another man came and also stood, until we were a group. When the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, sensed that we were behind him, he began to shorten the prayer. Then he entered his dwelling and prayed a prayer that he did not pray with us. He said: We said to him in the morning, "Did you notice us last night?" He said: He replied, "Yes, that is what prompted me to do what I did." He said: Then the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, began to practice continuous fasting, and that was at the end of the month. Some men from his companions began to practice continuous fasting as well. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "What is the matter with men who practice continuous fasting? You are not like me. By God, if the month were prolonged for me, I would fast continuously in a manner that would make the extremists abandon their extremism."
