And it was narrated to us by ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Muʿādh; he said: narrated to us my father; he said: narrated to us Shuʿbah, from Muḥammad ibn Ziyād, who said: I heard Abū Hurayrah — may Allah be pleased with him — saying: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Fast upon seeing it (the crescent), and break the fast upon seeing it. And if the month is obscured to you, then count thirty (days)."
