Yahya ibn Ma'in narrated to me, Ghandar narrated to us, Shu'bah narrated to us — and Bishr ibn Khalid also narrated it to me, and the wording is his — Muhammad, meaning Ibn Ja'far, informed us, from Shu'bah, from Sulayman, from Abu Wa'il, from Abu Mas'ud, who said: We were commanded to give charity. He said: We used to carry loads [for wages]. He said: So Abu 'Aqil gave in charity half a sa' — he said: And another man came with something more than that. Then the hypocrites said: "Indeed Allah is free of need of this one's charity, and the other did nothing but show off." So the verse was revealed: "Those who criticize the volunteer givers among the believers in charities and those who find nothing [to give] except their own effort" — and Bishr did not utter the word "al-muttawwi'in" (the volunteer givers).
